Janice Long

ALL ABOUT ME:  

Hi! I'm Janice Long, a Music for Young Children teacher in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.

I teach Music for Young Children because I believe every child can benefit from music education and the MYC program blends fun with high-quality well-rounded instruction to provide a solid music foundation.

My background is a mix of music and software engineering. I studied music under the Royal Conservatory of Toronto completing my Grade 9 piano. I taught private piano lessons during my university career as a part-time job, and although I thoroughly enjoyed teaching, it was not a career goal at that time.  After a 10-year career in software engineering I stumbled across MYC and investigated it for my first child. Within a very short time, I was thrilled to see that beyond learning to play the piano and the discipline that our daily practice routine was instilling in him, my son was also benefitting from the creative aspects of the program while being unaware of the solid music theory foundation he was receiving through the fun and games.  I was so impressed with the program that I began teaching the program in 2004 after the birth of our third child. Our three children have now graduated from MYC and continue to pursue music in their chosen directions.

STUDIO SCHEDULE FOR 2026-2027:

I am now taking registrations for Fall 2026.  

I will be offering keyboard programs for beginners ages 3 1/2 up to 10 years of age. 

Level 1 classes for beginner students will be running at the following times for Sept. 2026 - May 2027:  
Sunshine 1 (for ages 3.5-4): Wednesdays 3:15-4:15
                                              or Thursdays 9-10am

Sunbeams 1 (for ages 5-6): Mondays 5-6pm 
                                             or Tuesdays 9-10am
                                             or Tuesdays 5:45-6:45pm

Moonbeams 1 (for ages 7-10): Tuesdays 7-8pm
                                                 or Wednesdays 2-3pm 
                                                 (I have flexibility with this class day/time for any interested homeschooling families)

Level 2-3 (non-beginner levels) classes will be running at the following times for Sept. 2026 - May 2027:
Sunshine 2:  Tuesdays 3:15-4:15
Sunbeams 2:  Wednesdays 4:30-5:30
Sunbeams 3:  Mondays 3:40-4:40

My music studio features: 
- 4 keyboards, 1 full-size digital piano, 1 upright piano 
- an assortment of rhythm instruments
- space for up to 6 children and their parents on the floor to study songbooks, perform songs with movement and play music games
