BIO

I have been teaching in South Winnipeg for 32 years and will be retiring in June of 2025.  I have been blessed to have had the opportunity to teach this amazing program and have been inspired by the MYC Community and families that have journeyed through this incredible program.  The MYC Method is by far the best program to introduce young children and give them a strong music foundation to grow from.  This unique program engages the students to learn how to read and write music.  These tools are essential in truly understanding the language of music.  I have seen amazing growth in children through the different levels and the music learning is both fun and age appropriate.  With the amazing collaboration of MYC Teachers around the world, we continue to find ways to ensure our students enjoy their quality music education.

MUSIC LESSONS SHOULD BE FUN!!!

Hello, my name is Suzanne Myskew. Welcome to my website!!!

I can’'t remember a time when I wasn'’t teaching MYC®. I began my MYC journey in 1992.  I was teaching private lessons but felt I wanted more as a music teacher and thus began my training with Music For Young Children® in Winnipeg. The knowledge and foundation I received as an MYC teacher taught me that "quality instruction" created "quality students".

The language of music is for everyone. In order to comprehend music to it’s fullest, music education should include a balance of reading and writing, singing, theory, history, ear training, sight reading, and yes, composition. MYC allows your child to explore and use their own imagination when making music.

My primary goal as a music teacher is to give students a life-long love and appreciation of music.  Within that ideal, I try to make learning music fun, rewarding and achievable for every student.  Luckily, the Music for Young Children program is the perfect way to accomplish those goals!  I am looking forward to my 33rd year of teaching MYC.

In MYC, your child's experience will be:

Fun:  We have fun in our classes using games, movement and puppets.

Motivating:  Children are motivated by the dynamics of the group activities and parents support.

Comprehensive:  Our main focus is keyboard but its much more than just piano lessons.  The MYC curriculum is very child friendly and age appropriate and introduced in three beginner levels.  Our students are ready to take their Royal Conservatory Grade 1 piano upon completion of their MYC experience.

The support, sharing, and friendships I’ve acquired in the MYC community are immeasurable. The network of teachers, parents and students have proved to be a invaluable stepping stone in my life and musical career. The learning curve as a teacher has been nothing but amazing. My goal is to share my passion and love of music with young families. Music is for everyone, and a language everyone can learn.

Watch your child light up at his first attempts in "making music".  Please call to arrange for a tour of my studio and meet with me and find out more about "Music For Young Children®"

or

call and make arrangements to "sit-in" and experience an MYC class in my Winnipeg home.

Testimonials

I have 2 boys who each spent 4 years with MYC starting at age 4. It helped improve their focus and concentration in classes, their math skills, their rhythm and especially their love for and ability to make music. Both have gone on to score honors in royal conservatory piano exams up to grade 6 and they both now play multiple instruments and have been very successful in school and provincial honor bands. The theory they learned with MYC has payed off in helping them score high marks in music classes at school and has helped them to teach themselves how to compose music and learn new instruments on their own. It was one of the best decisions we made when our boys were small. The time spent at MYC also gave us a chance to learn together with them and form a special bond with our kids. My husband tried other programs before finding MYC and highly recommends it.

My husband and I are learning at home with our family of five children.

We have been involved with Music For Young Children® since 1998 when our eldest daughter began with the program at 4 years of age.  Since then, our two oldest children have completed the 5-year program and we now have our two middle children enrolled.

What we like best about MYC is the way the parents are involved in the child’s learning.  Not only during “classtime” but the continued partnership at home.  Although we were both musically inclined before, we have both learned so much from participating in MYC.

We have all learned so much about playing, rhythm, singing, theory and even composing – but most of all MYC has made music a daily part of our lives!

The children like the games they play.  They also feel successful because their differences and strengths are encouraged and developed.  In each class, there will always be one area where you notice your child really excels while still enjoying and learning about the other facets of music.

Children all learn so differently it’s good to have a program that respects and addresses all the different learning styles.

We’ve had fun learning together.  Having a teacher you work well with is so important also.

MYC provides a great springboard to enable children to forge ahead with whatever instrument they may choose later on.

Happy learning!

Louise F.

Dear MYC Parents,

Welcome to the exciting world of Music For Young Children® where I am sure your child will enjoy learning the basic skills of music. With the enrollment of your child you have made an important educational decision for your child. Both you and your child will receive valuable music training that will provide a lifetime of enjoyment. Furthermore, research indicates that children studying music show marked improvement in other subjects as well. Music is for EVERYONE and with your meaningful direction at home, we can provide a gift that will last a lifetime, the gift of music! With MYC’s philosophy, our goal is for music to become a “happy habit” for your child.

MYC classes are approximately 55 minutes in length and will run for 36 weeks commencing  the week of September 5th,  2022. The MYC® music year includes a class recital at Christmas, Composition Recital, as well as the Year-End recital in May (locations to be determined). We will take a 2-week break at Christmas and 1 week through the Spring Break.

To help our classes run smoothly and to avoid lost time, I ask for your co-operation in the following areas:

Payment

To register for the upcoming year and reserve your spot, I will require the Registration Fee and Tuition Payment  post-dated from September 1, 2022 to May 1, 2022 (incl. June 1st for MB3 students). You can choose to pay the Tuition monthly, bi-monthly or in two payments from September 1st to December 1st, 2022 (4 months tuition) and January 1st  to May 1st, 2023 (5 months tuition). There is a $15.00 Recital Fee per family which I will collect on January 1st to cover the cost of the two recital venues.

Parking

Please park on Grandmont Blvd. alongside Grandmont Park. PLEASE NO PARKING on Pirson Crescent. It is my intent to be respectful of my neighbours by keeping vehicle and pedestrian traffic down to a minimum. Please enter through the south side door of my home. Come right in!

Punctuality

Please arrive 10 minutes before to settle in for solo time. Late arrivals are an unnecessary distraction to the class and I cannot promise to fit in your child's solo.

Class Time

Siblings or other members of the famiy are not allowed in the studio during class time.   This also has the potential to void my business insurance. Please no food or drink allowed in the studio. It would be appreciated if you have socks/slippers in your bag to wear in the studio. Please turn off your cell phones when the class is in progress.

Homework Assignments

Homework assignments for your level will be e-mailed to you every week before the class.  .

Absences

I would appreciate a call or an e-mail to let me know you are unable to attend the class so that I can e-mail you the homework. There will be no make-up classes or refunds for missed classes. If you know of your absence ahead of time, it may be possible to make arrangements to attend another class. If a class must be cancelled due to bad weather, etc., the class will be held on Zoom at the regular scheduled time.  It is very important to attend classes in order to keep your child motivated and to avoid frustration from falling behind.

Withdrawal

Please remember that I am reserving your child’s spot in my teaching schedule for the full 36 weeks of the program. The first 8 weeks is non-refundable and a one month’s paid notice is required. For this reason, I am asking that you “hang in there”. It takes time to get into the swing of lessons and practice and to give your child a chance to get used to new friends and activities. There are no refunds after February 1, 2021.

Some advice on Studying Music:

You or your child’s interest in music classes may not always maintain a steady level. Consistent practice and attendance will aid in musical success and motivation. These fluctuations of interest are PERFECTLY NORMAL and should not signal an end to the musical training for you and your child. There are very helpful suggestions listed weekly in the Activity Book at the bottom of the homework page. If you are uncomfortable with any aspect of the class, please do not hesitate to call me to discuss these concerns before you make a drastic decision to stop valuable music training.

I am looking forward to teaching MYC to your child this year, and I am confident that we will all find this an enjoyable and rewarding experience.

Musically yours,
Suzanne Myskew
