Music Biography

I started taking piano lessons when I was barely 5 years old.  Even in my early years I was encouraged to compete in Festivals, perform in recitals, and take exams.  As I grew older, music became an even more ingrained part of my life as I moved up through the levels of the Royal Conservatory of Music on piano, and sang in school and church choirs.

When I reached High School, I learned new instruments, experimenting with trombone and bassoon, but mostly playing keyboard and percussion.  I played in both the jazz band and the more classically-focused concert band as well as beginning my career as an accompanist for choirs and solo performers.

It was during my high school years that I also began my teaching career.  First, I acted as a substitute teacher for my own early piano teacher while she was away, and then taking on a few of my own students.  Each year since then I have almost always had at least a few piano students.

By the time I completed High School, I had also successfully completed my Grade 10 piano exam with the Royal Conservatory of Canada (RCM).  I attended Trent University for 4 years, completing an Honours degree in Geography and Environmental Science with an emphasis in Geographic Information Systems Applications.  During my time at Trent, I also completed the History and Harmony co-requisites for my Grade 10 piano exam, thereby earning the Grade 10 certificate.

I have now been teaching piano for nearly 20 years and have guided many students successfully through their own recitals, festivals and exams.  I also find many opportunities to put my musical talents to use, such as accompanying church services, solo performers, groups, and providing musical support to weddings, funerals, and other important life events.

After many years of teaching private piano lessons (teacher and student one on one) I discovered Music For Young Children (MYC).  This fantastic program has really changed how I approach the beginning piano student.  In small groups, children discover the joy of making music with their peers.  Games, hands-on manipulatives, songs and ensemble playing all contribute to a rich music-making experience that caters to children of all learning types.  Upon completion of the program, the well-rounded graduates are equipped to pursue further music studies in any discipline.

Thank you for visiting my site.  Please come back often, and email me any comments or questions you have.  I look forward to guiding you and your family through an exciting experience with music.

Sincerely,

Priscilla Hurlington B.Sc.  Gr. 10 RCM, MYCC
