Meet the Teacher

Hi! I'm Barb Thomson.  Welcome to my website and to

Music for Young Children in Cambridge.

I teach music from infants to adults. The infant and toddler program is the Music Pups from The Music Class. It is an excellent singing and rhythm instrument program for babies and their families. The Music for Young Children program is a group music/piano program for pre-schoolers to adults and I also teach piano privately.

It is my experience that there isn't a better introductory music program than Music for Young Children.
Since 1987, I have been teaching the 'The Happy Habit of Learning Music' to over 800 enthusiastic children and their families.  It is a well-rounded music lesson that includes:

  • Keyboard work
  • Singing and learning to sing in pitch
  • Ear training
  • Sight reading
  • Music theory games
  • Creative movement
  • Composing
  • Parental involvement

I try to instill a life long love of music in my students.  I want to make sure that each class has a 'fun' component.  We have Wacky Hair Day, Dress-Up Day, Pajama Day, Sports Day, Beach Day and everyone's favourite Camp Day.  We also have Practice Incentives to keep the fun in the practices too.

The Cambridge Times Readers recognized myself and Music for Young Children as a Gold Winner in the Music Lessons category.

It is important for the children to feel comfortable playing in front of others, so each class has a STAR performer.  Each week one of the students in each class gets to prepare a favourite song to play for their class.  This is good practice for our two recitals each year.

At the spring recital, each student plays a favourite song and there is singing and creative movement as well.  It is an important time to acknowledge all the students' hard work throughout the year and to congratulate the graduating class as they prepare to write their theory exam and play their grade one RCM exam.  This past spring, we congratulated Caitlyn, who placed in the MYC Composition Festival, (the biggest composition festival in the world), with her musical composition, 'Rainbow Slide'.
